Top 10 Things to do in Luxembourg

Despite being small, Luxembourg is one of the most multicultural countries in the world, with more than 170 different nationalities represented here. Luxembourg is the only place to have twice been named the European Capital of Culture, and this little backpacker-friendly country is packed with things to do. Let’s look at our top recommendations!

10. Explore the Bock and the City Casements

The Bock Cliff in Luxembourg is famous for its cannons and fortifications, where a series of underground tunnels can be explored. These tunnels span 21 kilometers and are excavated out of solid rock cliffs, which are an astounding engineering achievement. They were built with the goal of hiding soldiers as well as storing horses and supplies. Many of the tunnels can be walked through, and at the top of the plateau are the decaying remnants of an ancient castle that was only found in 1963.

9. Take a stroll through the Old City

The UNESCO-listed Old City, the historic center of town, is the perfect site to start your journey in Luxembourg City. It is perched on a cliff overlooking the junction of the Alzette and Petrusse rivers. The Old City is small, but it contains enough attractions to keep you busy for a half-day or longer – start with Place Guillaume, the main square, where you can see the equestrian monument dedicated to William II of Orange-Nassau, who established Luxembourg as a constitutional monarchy, and the Hôtel de Ville or City Hall, which is located directly across the square.

8. Stroll along Europe’s “most beautiful balcony”

A stroll along Le Chemin de la Corniche is one of Europe’s top things to do. This amazing bridge is short but dramatic, and it has caught the minds of writers for ages, earning it the title “most beautiful balcony of Europe.” The pathway, Le Chemin de la Corniche, is raised far above Luxembourg City and follows the walls of the fortress that towers over the city.

7. Bicycle Tour of Luxembourg City

The Luxembourg government has made significant efforts to encourage cycling in metropolitan areas. Renting a car here is unnecessary because the city is just 5000 hectares in size! On a bicycle tour with an informed guide, you may ride past the city’s most important sights! Enjoy the gorgeous trip while passing by landmarks such as the Grand Duke’s Palace.

Winter activities include light festivals, auto shows, and other occasions. There is always something exciting to see and do in Luxembourg City, no matter when you arrive.

5. Visit the Remembrance Monument

The Monument of Remembrance, formerly known as Glle Fra, is a war memorial dedicated to Luxembourg’s dead troops from World War I, World War II, and later wars. Thousands of Luxembourg troops chose to serve with the French army and Allied forces throughout both world wars and the Korean War, with around 2,000 fatalities. A golden figure of Nike, the Greek goddess of triumph, holds out a wreath at the top of the obelisk, her head looking downward toward a dead soldier resting at the pillar’s base.

4. Wine tasting along the Moselle River

Luxembourg is surrounded by France and Germany, two of the world’s top wine-producing countries. But did you know, Luxembourg also has vineyards? The Moselle River valley, about a half-hour drive or bus ride from downtown, produces 16 million bottles of wine each year. There’s a lot of wine here and some recognized varieties like Riesling and Chardonnay. Many vineyards in the Moselle River valley welcome tourists and provide tastings and excursions.

3. Go to Château de Vianden

This castle is located just outside Luxembourg City, in Vianden, but at less than an hour away, it is a must-see while visiting the capital. The majestic Château de Vianden, built between the 11th and 14th centuries, is one of Europe’s greatest intact feudal mansions of the Gothic period. The chapel and the big and minor palaces built between the end of the 12th century and the beginning of the 13th century are the most remarkable portions of the fortress.

2. Go to Little Switzerland

Echternach, the country’s oldest town, is located in the town of Mullerthal. When visiting Little Switzerland, there are lots of things to do, such as hiking adventures through the Mullerthal paths and feasting your taste buds on cuisines based only on cheese, honey, or liqueurs. The Mullerthal area also has remote, medieval European cities contributing to its attractiveness. If you’re in the area, visit Beaufort, Bergdorf, Echternach, and Mullerthal, which have beautiful century-old buildings and natural beauty.

1. Try hot chocolate with a view

The Chocolate House, a local and visitor favorite, is the ideal setting for a coffee or the restaurant’s specialty, hot chocolate. Natalie Bonn, a Luxembourgish chef whose passion for sweets is evident in every aspect of the tiny café, designed it. Customers select a delectable chocolate block, ranging from conventional milk to pistachio and latte macchiato, which is served on a wooden spoon. The chocolate block is then dipped into a warm cup of milk and gently melts into the sweet drink, creating a unique taste. Located just across from the Grand Ducal Palace’s entrance, tourists may enjoy their beverages while admiring the Renaissance architecture or, if timed well, the changing of the guards.
